Immigration: Good or Bad? |

Written By: Rina Meutia File Name: Temporarily Not Available Immigration issue has been very interesting to me especially since I came to the United States because people in this country seem to dislike immigrants. It surprises me because America, by history, was founded by were all immigrants from different countries who came to seek for freedom and opportunity. This country has been reshaped and renewed by the talents, energy, and enterprise of these new citizens. (Camarota,1998). America has a long heritage of welcoming immigrants and currently, almost 60 million out of 300 million people in the United States are immigrants. Before I took the economic class, especially the macro part, I did not realize that actually immigration and trade are related to each other in benefiting the country’s economic development. I become more aware the importance of trade in the global economy, especially after I learned about the concept of “Comparative Advantage” after the explanation and the discussion in the class. If the United States supports international trade, the United States has to also support immigration.

Abstract This research was addressed to the companies that conducted stock splits in 1998 until 2002. Stock price in capital market often react positively at the announcement of stock splits. This reaction clearly is not caused by stock splits itself; because stock splits information is not economic valuable. Stock splits only increase the numbers of stock that offer to the market by decreasing stock price whereas its capital stock balances and retained earning still being equal.
The problem of this research are, is there any excess return around the announcement of stock splits? And also is there any changing of trading liquidities after stock splits is conducted effectively? The hypothesis that will be tested in this research are: on day t, there is no return that significantly different from zero, trading liquidities before the announcement of stock splits and after stock splits was conducted effectively is not different significantly. Result of this research shows the existence of positive excess return before stock splits was announced. So the writer concludes that the information has been leakage before the announcement of stock splits was publicized... Download Full Version |

Abstract:
Electricity crisis in Aceh is a phenomenal case. It is caused by shortage in electricity supply, and hindered by a long political conflict and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. As electricity sector is heavily regulated by government law and policy, this paper analyzes the role of government as provider and policy maker in electricity sector in Aceh to seek alternative policy that enables the province to solve its electricity crisis. Given the limitation of government public investment in electricity infrastructure on one hand, and the abundant renewable energy resource in Aceh on the other hand, I sketched the problem using a Diffuse and Specific Costs and Benefits Analysis. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that Aceh’s local government should focus its investment on micro-hydro power generation. |
